One of the fun parts of being a homeowner is getting to decide how each space is used. You might turn the dining room into an office or craft room for example. And maybe you even have ideas for the garage.

A lot of people think of the garage as a space to store tools or cars whenever they don’t need them. But are there better ways to use this space?

If you’re thinking of doing a garage makeover at your house, then you might have the right idea. There’s so much that you can do with the garage space that you have.

Read on for some garage makeover ideas and tips to try right now.

Turning It Into a Living Space

One thing that people often like to do with their garages is turning them into a living space. The best part about there’s a variety of ways that you can do this.

One of the best ways to start on this project is with plenty of seating. This is especially important if you have a large family or you like to entertain guests often. This means there is plenty of seating no matter how many people show up at your house.

Then you want some kind of entertainment. Most people will go with a television of some kind. For something a little more fun, you could get a projector to display against an open wall.

You can also add other fun features like a wet bar for serving drinks. You might also consider having a space for serving and eating food in this area as well. This makes it more comfortable and convenient whether you’re just binging Netflix or watching your favorite sports with friends.

Another thing to consider in a garage living space is lighting. This is an important element in any room in your home. If your garage is going to be a living space, then you might want to consider some new lighting in there as well.

Making a Workshop

The next thing that you can do with your new space is to turn it into a workshop. If this is what you want to do with your garage, then the design will vary greatly based on what work you plan to do out here.

Think about what it is you’re passionate about working on. Think about the tools that you use to work on these passion projects. A garage workshop should have designated space and organization to accommodate this.

A woodworker, for example, will need a designated space for their lumber. They should have a space for their tools and a table to use for drawing up designs. It should have plenty of room to move around safely.

An artist, on the other hand, is going to need garage organization for all of their supplies. Their paints, brushes, and canvases should all have designated areas in this area. And of course, it should have a designated space to work at when they’re ready.

If you use your garage to practice music, then this too counts as a kind of workshop. Rugs might be a good idea in these cases since they prevent sound from echoing in open spaces. You’ll want safe places to keep instruments and equipment until it’s time to use them.

Home Gym

It’s so much more convenient to have a home gym than having to pay for a gym membership. You’ll always be certain that your equipment is clean and ready for you to use if you have a home gym. And the easiest place to set up a home gym is often the garage.

This gives you a lot more space to work with than any room inside your house. It gives you a good designated space away from the chaos of the rest of the house. When you enter this room, you should feel ready to start a good workout.

There should be a designated spot for weights. Any machines you have should have enough space between them to be safe.

You might consider getting some floor mats to lay down so that your feet won’t take too much abuse while you’re working out. Exercise mats can also be spread out on the floor so they’re ready to use whenever you need them. Remember, your goal here should be safety and comfort.

Other than that, the only other thing you might want to consider is a designated area for a television or Bluetooth speaker. This gives you something to entertain yourself with while you’re working out that won’t clog your ears if you get called back inside suddenly.

An Extra Bedroom

Another common thing that people might do with their garage space is to turn it into a guest bedroom. In some ways, this might take a little more work than turning it into a living space for entertaining.

A guest bedroom needs to be comfortable, but it doesn’t necessarily need to have a lot of bells and whistles. Chances are, whoever is staying at your house won’t be spending a lot of time in their guest room.

To that end, the first thing you’ll need is a nice paint job and flooring. Just because you’ve turned your guest room into a garage doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to look like a garage. This is the first step to making it feel more like a livable space.

Then you’ll need some decent lighting and some bedside tables. This gives your guests a place to set their phones to charge at night and a way to see their belongings when they get ready in the mornings.

A rug is also a good idea so that guests don’t have to land their feet on a cold floor when they’re getting up in the morning.

And most importantly, you’ll need a bed in there. It should be reasonably comfortable. Make sure it has clean sheets and some pillows.

These are just the bare essentials you need in a guest room garage. Everything else is going to be a bonus for your guests.

Garage Storage

Maybe you don’t necessarily need to transform your garage into an extra room for your home. You might just like using it as storage for yard supplies, tools, and cars. This is perfectly fine too, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spruce it up a little.

One great way to do this is by giving yourself some nice garage organization. Cabinets and shelving go a long way to making your garage feel clean and fresh even if you just brought in your lawnmower from outside after using it.

You can design it to have all the space you need for any tools you have. Any spare items like lightbulbs can be stored safely in your new garage storage units. This clears up a lot of room that you can use for other things inside of your house.

Even seasonal items like decorations can be stored out there now.

And if you play your cards right, this new storage might also serve as a great place to hide Christmas and birthday presents from your kids. They’ll never suspect that you hid their new goodies out in the garage. And you’ll know they’re secure out there when it’s finally time to deliver them.

The Garage Door

Finally, the last thing you can never overlook when you’re giving your garage a makeover is the door. This is the first thing about the garage that you and anyone who comes to your house will see.

A new garage door is an easy way to give your house a facelift without changing too much. It’s also a great way to lower the noise level of your garage door whenever it raises or lowers. So it’s better for your ears and less annoying for your neighbors when you come in and out of the house.

If you’re turning the garage into a living space, then you might also consider getting a screen garage door. These work alongside your garage door and raise and lower in much the same way.

This lets you enjoy the nice weather whenever you’re out in your garage without risking letting bugs or wild animals inside. And they have a convenient smaller entry door inside of them so people can still come and go without having to raise the entire screen. So if someone’s grilling outside while everyone’s in the garage, they can bring the food in and go right back to work without any fuss.
